High Deductible Plan F

High Deductible Plan F is a great alternative to the standard version. The only difference is that the high deductible version comes with (you guessed it!) a high deductible that the member must pay before the full coverage benefits begin. Once the deductible has been met, the plan pays for 100% of the costs. The higher deductible version has the benefit of lower monthly premiums.

Who is best-suited for High Deductible Plan F?

This plan is great for Medicare beneficiaries who need a lower monthly premium but are still comfortable with paying a high deductible. Individuals who only see the doctor infrequently, live in states that allow Part B excess charges, and like to travel outside of the United States are well-suited for High Deductible Plan F.

The Deductible of High Deductible Plan F

In 2023, the deductible for this plan was $2700. Beneficiaries will pay this amount out-of-pocket, and then all remaining expenses would be 100% covered.

Enrolling in Medigap High Deductible Plan F

Individuals can enroll in High Deductible Plan F as long as they have already enrolled in Original Medicare – Parts A and B. The best time to enroll is during your open enrollment period, which begins on your Part B effective date. Beneficiaries will have six months from that day to enroll in a plan with guaranteed issue rights. After that time frame, enrollment may be declined based on an individual’s health history.

Medigap High Deductible Plan F Premiums

Individual premiums will vary based on which state the individual is seeking coverage in, which carrier they’re purchasing from, and also individual factors like gender, age, tobacco use, and a few other details. The average cost for High Deductible Plan F ranges from $40-$80 each month. In general, premiums are higher in states who have a higher cost of living.

Has High Deductible Plan F been discontinued?

Yes, all first-dollar coverage plans were discontinued beginning on January 1, 2020. Plans C and the standard Plan F were also discontinued. CMS no longer allows any Medigap plan to include first dollar coverage. Beneficiaries who were already enrolled or who turned 65 prior to January 1, 2020 are still eligible for this plan.

An Alternative to High Deductible Plan F

If you are not eligible for Plan F because of the changes that occurred in 2020, a good alternative to consider is High Deductible Plan G. This plan works the same way as the High Deductible Plan F. The only coverage difference is that Plan G does not pay the Part B deductible.

Is High Deductible Plan F a good option?

Obviously, the downside of this plan is the high deductible. For that reason, it’s not for everyone. However, those who wish to lower their monthly premiums without sacrificing other areas of coverage will find this plan very beneficial.

This plan often appeals to individuals who are coming off of an employer’s coverage that also had a high deductible. As long as you have some money set aside for the deductible, this plan is a great option.
